Known as the "Mount Rushmore State," South Dakota became our 40th state November 2, 1889 . The quarter features the state bird which is the Chinese ring-necked pheasant flying by Mount Rushmore National Monument, featuring Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, and Thomas Jefferson.
