The American Buffalo Gold Coin
First offered to the public by the U.S. Mint on 6/22/06 with a circulation per annum of 300,000.
The face value of this coin is $50.00 and the first .99999 fine 24-karat gold coins ever struck by the U.S. Mint.
James Earle Fraser's original design of the five cent nickel was a little different than what is currently being minted, but is still a good depiction of the original coin.
It is believed that Fraser used three different Indian models from three different Indian tribes in creating the final version. In addition Fraser used an actual buffalo model borrowed from New York City's Central Park Zoo around 1910.
